Trump Administration Policy Threatens Rural SNAP Availability in Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. — While Trump’s USDA threatens access to SNAP retailers in rural Wisconsin, the USDA also recently announced that starting in November, retailers who accept SNAP benefits must carry seven types of food in each category of dairy, vegetables or fruits, grains and protein. This is nearly impossible for small retailers in rural Wisconsin to adhere to due to the lack of demand for foods other than the staples, and could force their customers to drive even further just to purchase basic kitchen essentials like milk and eggs. 

Derrick Van Orden has held campaign events recently with USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins—and has been silent on how this cut to SNAP availability will harm his constituents.

“We’re in this mess because D.C. politicians like Derrick Van Orden would rather suck-up to Trump and his cabinet officials than stand up for the rural Wisconsinites this administration is stealing food from,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesperson Haley King. “D.C. Derrick continues to embarrass himself by celebrating legislation and Trump cronies who are taking food away from children, veterans, and the elderly.”

This comes on the back of Derrick Van Orden helping pass the biggest cuts in history to SNAP—something he promised would not be cut.
