National Move Over Day Promotes Safety Law For Officers, First Responders, Roadside Workers
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds all of the state law that requires vehicle operators to move over or slow down when approaching stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights, and roadside workers.
The important safety law enacted in 2001 is the theme of National Move Over Day on Oct. 17. The law seeks to protect law enforcement officers, first responders and other roadside workers who routinely work on our roadways.
ATV/UTV Operators Also Restricted In Certain Situations
In addition to Move Over laws, administrative code makes it illegal to operate an ATV/UTV over 10 mph when traveling within 100 feet of a person not on an ATV/UTV, snowmobile or motorcycle.
State statute also prohibits operating an ATV/UTV on frozen surfaces of public waters or on an ATV trail within 100 feet of another person not operating a vehicle, or faster than 10 mph. This provision includes hikers, equestrians, stopped ATVS/UTVS, law enforcement officers, first responders and trail workers.
"It’s always a good idea to slow down and give non-ATV/UTV operators plenty of room when out riding," said Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, DNR off-highway vehicle administrator. "Not only is this a safe operating strategy, it also showcases a positive and respectful image of the ATV/UTV community."
"It is also imperative that we give our DNR conservation wardens, law enforcement partners, first responders, tow truck drivers and highway workers extra room and consideration. For these folks, working on trails and roads has inherent dangers and responsible operation relieves most of those concerns."
Remember to follow these ATV/UTV safety tips:
- Always ride sober, with zero alcohol or substances.
- Wear helmets, seatbelts and eye protection even when loading and unloading machines.
- Follow all regulatory signs, speed limits and stop fully at all stop signs.
- While on routes, operate with lights on, on the extreme right-hand side of the traffic lane and at safe speeds.
- Take a safety class regardless of age requirements.
